Govt to decide if convicts can participate in polls: ACC chief

Tuesday, 11 November 2008

Anti-corruption Commission (ACC) chairman Lt Gen (retd) Hasan Mashhud Chowdhury Monday said it was up to the government to decide whether the convicted politicians would be allowed to participate in the upcoming elections, reports UNB.
"We have nothing to say," he told journalists when asked about the participation of convicted politicians in the elections scheduled to be held next month.
The ACC chairman added, "I have said before, the government would take a decision following the legal process."
Mashhud was speaking to the journalists at the Commission after a meeting with US ambassador James Moriarty.
He said the anti-corruption drive would continue after the change of government following the elections. "There may be changes in directions…There may be a change in pace. But the anti-graft campaign will continue," Mashhud reaffirmed.
Meanwhile, the ACC has decided to charge-sheet 16 individuals in 10 graft cases. It has also decided to file a case against former MP Abdul Wahab for earning illegal wealth and hiding information about it.
