Private universities in Bangladesh are operated by board of trustees and value added tax (VAT) is not generally applicable to the trustees. Now, National Board of Revenue said university authorities will have to pay VAT and it’s their decision. But the government will decide whether the universities will pay VAT. Sheikh Kabir Hossain, president of Association of Private Universities of Bangladesh (APUB), made the observations at a media briefing held in Dhaka city. Regarding students’ demonstration, he said students are staging protest programmes demanding withdrawal of VAT on tuition fees, creating public sufferings. He also urged the agitating students to stop their demonstrations. The briefing was held at Gulshan Club on Friday, according to a news agency.
