Govt to declare Halda 'Bangabandhu Fisheries Heritage': Speakers

CHATTOGRAM, Sept 06: The speakers at a view exchange meeting arranged by the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock disclosed that the government will declare the River Halda 'Bangabandhu Fisheries Heritage'.
The Divisional Commissioner of Chattogram ABM Azad chaired the meeting held at Chattogram Circuit House on Sunday. Deputy Commissioner of Chattogram Ilias Hussian and Director of Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute Dr Khalilur Rahman addressed the meeting as guests.
Among others, Upazila Nirhabi Officer (UNO) of Hathazari Mohammed Ruhul Amin, UNO of Fatikchari Md Saidul Arefin, UNO of Boalkhali Asia Khatoon, UNO of Raozan Jonaied Kabir Shohag, UNO of Manikchari Tamanna Mahamud, professors of Chattogram University Dr Mohammed Ali Azadi and Dr Manjurul Kibria, Director at environment directorate of Chattogram Md Moajjem Hossain, former director of Chattogram Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) Mahafujul Haque Shah, Deputy Director of social services department Md Shahidul Islam, Officer-in-charge (OC) of Hathazari Police Station Masud Alam, UP Chairman of Madarsha union Manjur Hossain Chowdhury, Senior Assistant Engineer of LGED Pratipod Dewan and representatives of various organisations delivered speeches.
The concerned officials of ministry declared that the government has already taken decision to declare Halda the Bangabandhu Fisheries Heritage.
Halda is the only river in the country where fishermen can collect fertilised eggs from the river bed and arrange for them to hatch later on, whereas only hatched fish fry (young fish) - and not fertilised eggs - can be caught in other rivers.
