Govt to develop southwestern region on priority basis

KHULNA, Apr 11: Commerce Minister Faruk Khan said the government would develop the southwestern region on priority basis as per the commitment of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
All measures would be taken for the development of trade and commerce in Khulna region. Construction of Padma Bridge will start soon for the interest of Mongla Port, the minister added.
The government is also considering bringing the southwestern region of the country including Khulna under the gas network, he said while addressing as chief guest the inaugural function of the month-long Khulna International Trade Fair-2009 at Khulna Circuit House ground Saturday.
The inaugural function presided over by the president of KCCI Sharuzzaman Mortoza was addressed, among others, by the state Minister for Labour and Employment Begum Monnujan Sufian, KCC Mayor Talukder Abdul Khaleque, Divisional Commissioner M Younisur Rahman as special guests. The function was attended, among others, by Molla Jalal Uddin, MP, Deputy Commissioner NM Ziaul Alam, KMP Commissioner Helal Uddin Badri and DIG Shaikh Hemayet Hossain.
A total of 12 pavilions and 152 local and foreign stalls have been set up in the fair.
The KITF convening committee has taken strict security measures in and around the fair venue. Round-the-clock banking service, fire service trucks, and medicare services centres have also been set up there.
A number of local and foreign products like computer, handicrafts, consumers products, foodstuff, home appliances, garments products, leather goods, handloom products, tribal dresses, electronic items, ceramics, aluminum, jute products, herbal medicine, silk products, building materials, marble tiles, battery, steel furniture, plastic set, cosmetics, cold drinks, etc will be exhibited and sold in the fair this year.
The commerce minister met with the local journalists at Khulna Press Club at noon and visited the Mongla EPZ and under construction Khanjahan Ali Airport at Foila under Rampal Upazila of Bagerhat district Saturday afternoon.
