FE Report
The government has decided to prepare a roadmap of its own to alleviate poverty, which will go alongside the programmes under the World Food Programme (WFP), run by the non-governmental organisations, official source said.
Ministry of Finance (MoF) took the decision at a meeting with Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF) last week as almost all the local and foreign agencies working in the country in poverty alleviation follow the WFP-drawn roadmap.
The meeting has assigned the PKSF to chart out the new poverty map, which is essential to combat the poverty at the grass-roots level, official sources added.
PKSF acting managing director Mosarraf Hossain Khan admitted the fact and said his organisation will prepare the poverty roadmap in a most comprehensive manner.
He said the poverty roadmap by WFP is the only mechanism that has been used by both local and foreign agencies in the country.
"The WFP poverty roadmap is very good one. But, many poverty-ridden areas like Sunamganj and Jamalpur have remained left out," said the PKSF acting chief.
Terming the preparation of the new poverty map is a big task he said it include all the poverty-prone area of the country so that poverty alleviation programme can be made more successful.
Chaired by MoF acting secretary Mohammad Tareque, the meeting directed the PKSF to give priority to the country's under-developed areas while preparing the roadmap.
The meeting also directed authorities concerned to take necessary measures so that PKSF can receive financial assistance from the World Bank sponsored new lending programme -- Access to Rural Finance.
It asked the PKSF to formulate a long-term vision up to 2020 for alleviation of poverty.
The meeting was told that the PKSF had been running micro-credit programme in rural areas since 1900s and disbursed Tk 10.72 billion among the poor and ultra poor people.
The PKSF provided Tk 5.80 billion to some 12325 ultra poor in 61 districts. Of the fund, the contribution of the government is Tk 2.16 billion. It also provided Tk 5.92 billion that included government contribution of Tk 1.75 billion towards funding 120904 small entrepreneurs.
