Govt to establish university in all districts in phases: Nahid

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid Thursday told the Parliament that the government has a plan to establish a university in each district in phases for pursuing higher education at home, reports BSS. The Minister said this in reply to a question from lawmaker Lutfur Rahman in the House Thursday. Mr Nahid said the government might consider setting up a public university in tourist town of Cox's Bazar in near future. He informed the House that the country has as many as 32 pubic universities and 51 private universities approved by the government. Replying to a question from lawmaker Nasimul Alam Chowdhury, the Education Minister said the government also has a plan to establish polytechnic institutes in each district of the country. The government has brought a total of 1,624 educational institutions under Monthly Payment Order (MPO) considering its significance; Mr Nahid said in reply to another question from M Shah Alam. This would be continued in the current fiscal, he said adding that the government will soon undertake a programme to bring more educational institutions under the MPO. Responding to a question from Khandaker Abdul Baten, Mr Nahid said the government is planning to establish one technical university in each Upazila in the light of national education policy. As part of the plan, the Minister said, a project has already been taken to set up polytechnic institute primarily in 35 upazilas.
