FE Report
The government is set to get around Tk 1.68 billion in carbon trading after replacing 28 million incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) bulbs, Prime Minister's Energy Adviser Dr Tawfiq -e- Elahi Chowdhury said Wednesday.
He said state-run Infrastructure Development Company Limited (IDCOL) has been entrusted with the responsibility of this trading under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
The energy adviser was speaking at a press conference on inauguration of the World Bank-funded Tk 2.79 billion project to replace incandescent bulbs with CFLs in 27 districts across the country.
The WB has been contributing Tk 2.75 billion for this project.
Delivering a presentation Power Secretary Md Abul Kalam Azad said the government has decided to distribute 28 million CFL bulbs among 9.0 million clients of these districts in two phases under the 'efficient lighting initiative for Bangladesh' project.
Around 500 megawatts (mw) of electricity could be saved on successful completion of the project, he said.
Under the first phase the government would distribute 5.50 million CFLs free of cost in different areas of 27 districts including the capital Dhaka on June 19.
All the energy saving bulbs will be distributed in a single day from 9 am to 5 pm as part of the government's move to reduce the electricity consumption.
The government earlier distributed around 23,500 CFLs in Dhaka Power Distribution Company (DPDC) areas under a pilot project in December 2009.
Remaining 22.50 million CFLs would be distributed by June 2011 in second phase.
State-owned power entities -- Power Development Board (PDB), Dhaka Electric Supply Company (DESCO), Dhaka Power Distribution Company (DPDC), Rural Electrification Board (REB) and West Zone Power Distribution Company (WZPDC) would distribute the CFLs simultaneously to the electricity consumers across the country.
The districts include Dhaka, Khulna, Jessore, Kushtia, Jhenidah, Chuadanga Faridpur, Rajbari, Madaripur, Gopalganj, Bagerhat, Gazipur,
Tangail, Chapainawabganj, Sylhet, Rangpur, Chittagong, Comilla, Gaibandha, Nilphamari, Lalmonirhat, Kurigram, Mymensingh, Kishorganj, Netrakona, Rajshahi and Natore.
To get the CFLs free of cost the consumers must have to go to the makeshift outlets of the power distribution companies and collect the lamps in exchange of their used operative conventional bulbs, said the power secretary.
Clients would have to show copies of their latest paid electricity bills to have the free CFLs.
