Govt to go for election after appointment of new EC: Suranjit

Wednesday, 11 January 2012

Railways Minister Suranjit Sengupta Tuesday said the incumbent grand alliance government will go to the next general elections after the appointment of the new election commissioners, reports UNB.
Talking to reporters at his secretariat office, he said there will be a constitutional vacuum after February 14 if the new election commission is not constituted before the deadline.
Suranjit, also a member of the Awami League advisory council, welcomed BNP's decision to join the dialogue with the President aimed at forging a consensus to constitute a new election commission.
Referring to BNP's contention that the dialogue would have been effective if the Prime Minister had initiated it since the President has no executive power, Suranjit said article 119 of the constitution empowers the President to appoint the election commission.
He, however, admitted that according to article 48 of the constitution, the President will appoint the election commission on the advice of the Prime Minister.
