Govt to import 0.2m tonnes of urea, 50,000 tonnes of wheat

Wednesday, 14 December 2011

The government has moved to import 0.2 million tonnes of urea and 50,000 tonnes of wheat to meet the domestic demand, reports UNB. The Cabinet Purchase Committee is going to consider its approval to three proposals on bulk import of two important commodities on emergency basis without holding its meeting. Officials said as there is no enough time to hold meeting of the Cabinet Purchase Committee, the proposals on bulk purchases are being considered for approval by taking opinions of the committee members through a circulation. "The validity of the tenders for purchase expires on December 15. That's why the Cabinet body is not going to hold its meeting for time constraint," said a senior official of the Cabinet Division. According to sources, 0.2 million tonnes of urea fertiliser will be imported under two separate tenders. Four suppliers will supply 0.1 million tonnes of urea through Mongla port at a price of at US$ 561.50 per tonne. Another 0.1 million tonnes will come through Chittagong port at a price of US$ 571.80 per tonne. One supplier will supply 50,000 tonnes, while another two will supply 25,000 tonnes each. Under a separate tender, the Food Department will import 50,000 tonnes of wheat from a Singapore-based firm at US$ 281.09 per tonne.
