The government will import 60,000 tonnes of wheat as part of regular procurement to meet the domestic demand and prevent any further rise in food prices, reports UNB.
Government's Cabinet Committee on Public Purchase Sunday approved a Food Ministry proposal on the import.
Two private firms have been selected to make the bulk import of the food-grain for supplying to the Food Directorate.
Each of the two firms -- Indian LMJ and the local Anwar Trading -- will import and supply 30,000 mt from India.
The price of per-metric tonne of wheat has been fixed at US$ 197.40 and the government has to spend Tk 863 million to make the total import.
Finance Minister AMA Muhith presided over the meeting while Cabinet Secretary Abdul Aziz briefed reporters about the committee's decision.
A total of seven purchase agenda were placed in the meeting, but the committee approved only one while sent back two proposals to the Housing and Public Works Ministry for its own decision.
The Housing and Public Works Ministry had proposed to build a total of 305 apartments for public servants at Mirpur and Lalmatia in the city.
"The Housing and Public Works Ministry should take the decision on its own," the meeting was quoted as saying.
Consultant appointment for two projects of the Water Resources Ministry was suspended as the minister concerned and the secretary were absent from the meeting.
Another two purchase proposals of Jamuna Fertiliser Company and Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited were sent back with suggestion that these two companies are public limited ones and their "boards can take their own decision".
