Govt to import sugar to douse heating market

Monday, 8 February 2010

The government has decided in principle to import sugar well ahead of Ramadan to meet its high demand during the holy month, as the market is already on an upturn again, reports UNB.
Bangladesh Sugar and Food Industries Corporation (BSFIC) has been asked to complete necessary procedures "immediately" for making the import.
Besides, installing distilleries, power generation from sugar refuse, and sugarcane import are also among a number of decisions taken Sunday for the industry.
The decisions were taken Sunday at a meeting of high officials of BSFIC, Agriculture Ministry, Food Department, and other government and research organisations with Industries Minister Dilip Barua in the chair.
Industries Ministry organised the meting, aiming to bring more land under sugarcane cultivation for the state-owned sugar-mills, ensure sufficient sugarcane during the crashing season, and disburse loans among farmers for sugar cultivation and realise those timely.
The meeting decided to give some incentives, including award, to the sugarcane farmers for encouraging them to grow more cane in order to meet its growing demand. It also recommended taking urgent measures to ease sufferings of the farmers in supplying their agro-outputs to the mills.
