Govt to introduce poverty-targeted stipend scheme

After a pioneering and highly successful gender-targeted female secondary stipend programme, government has now decided to introduce a poverty-targeted stipend scheme to address large disparities across different income groups in the secondary school access and quality in the new Secondary Education Quality and Access Enhancement Project (SEQAEP) that covers 121 upazilas in the country under the Ministry of Education.
To increase access and retention of poor girls and boys, SEQAEP will implement a pro-poor targeting of stipends and tuition programme through Proxy Means Testing (PMT).
This was disclosed at a national workshop on "Proxy Means Testing" at LGED Bhaban in the city Monday.
Ministry of Education additional secretary ATKM Ismail was present as the chief guest at the inaugural session while World Bank Country Director Xian Zhu and Ministry of Education chief (Planning) Md Mesbahuddin were present as the special guests.
LGED chief engineer Md Shahidul Hassan presided over the function.
Also present on the occasion were SEQAEP project director Md Sirajul Islam, PMT coordinator MA Akhtar Hossain and LGED additional chief engineer Md Wahidur Rahman.
