Govt to monitor egg market amid price manipulation concern

FE REPORT | Tuesday, 28 May 2024

The government will monitor the egg market amid a recent hike in the price of the widely consumed item following reports that vested quarters have stored a vast quantity of eggs in cold storages.
Agriculture minister Dr Md Abdus Shahid told this to reporters after an inter-ministerial meeting held in his secretariat office on Monday.
Food minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder and state minister for commerce Ahasanul Islam Titu were present at the meeting, with Dr Shahid in the chair.
The agriculture minister said there was no shortage of rice and prices were stable, thanks to good Boro production.
Potato production has decreased slightly, but the import option is there. Onion import has also remained open. So, there will be no problem, according to him.
"Egg has gone up price slightly for reported storage of the item in cold storage. The issue will be monitored."
"Monitoring is ongoing. We're not sitting, the secretaries concerned are communicating with district administrators. They call the DCs concerned every day, if needed," explained the minister.
"We sat with three ministries to review the overall market situation, including prices and stock, in the country…," he added.
Dr Shahid also said, "We've agreed to work together so that a better market situation can be ensured at all levels in the coming days."
According to him, the price situation of essential items countrywide is stable as well as affordable now.
"We've seen a comparative picture of the prices of rice, sugar, ginger and garlic with our neighbouring countries. Everything is stable here…"
Dr Shahid said the prime minister was aware of the essential market situation, adding: "We'll inform her of the development from Monday's meeting."
