The government will buy additional 240 vehicles for the Upzila chairmen from the state-owned car assembling plant Progoti Industries Ltd, officials said Wednesday.
"Progoti has already got the authorisation for supplying the vehicles to the chairmen in two phases," Jahir Uddin Chowdhury, managing director of Progoti told the FE.
In the first phase, the requisition was for 180 cars out of which 50 has been delivered while the remaining 130 were ready for delivery.
The government would allot the 130 vehicles through lottery and deliver on January 12.
The cumulative price of the 240 vehicles is Tk 850 million, while the 180 would cost Tk. 620 million.
Recently the company sought government permission to allow the state-owned industry supply cars for the MPs.
If the government employees use cars provided by Progoti, the fund would return to the government he said and added "there will be no audit objections for the cars provided by us".
