Govt to provide autonomy to specialised hospitals, MCs

Friday, 1 May 2009

The government is considering autonomy for the country's specialised government hospitals and medical colleges (MCs) after reviewing whether it will facilitate better health services to the people, reports BSS.
"The issue of giving autonomy to the specialised government hospitals and medical colleges is being reviewed for better health services for the people. In probable cases, these institutions will get autonomy," said Health and Family Welfare Minister AFM Ruhal Huq in the city Thursday.
He said this while addressing as the chief guest a function to celebrate the "University Day 2009", marking the 11th founding anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (MSMMU) at its Shaheed Dr Milon Auditorium.
Health Affairs Adviser to the Prime Minister Dr Syed Modasser Ali inaugurated the function calling upon the physicians to be more sincere with the poor patients. The government was pledge-bound to serve the nation, not to work for implementing personal agenda of anybody, he said.
Dr Ruhal Huq emphasised the need for bringing all medical colleges of the country under the BSMMU and said it would greatly help monitor the activities of such institutions from a single station.
In this respect, he said recommendations had been made to run all major hospitals of the country through a committee to be constituted with the representations of doctors, officers, nurses and local elite.
Describing the BSMMU a specialised medical and educational institution, the minister said all had to work unitedly to turn this campus into an international one. "The government is looking for 100 acres of Khas land for the BSMMU in the capital city to construct a full-fledged medical university," he said.
Dr Huq said the government had already gone one step forward by installing computers and connecting all the upazila health complexes through Internet to fulfil the vision of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for building digital Bangladesh by 2021.
He directed the physicians of the country's leading medical university to dedicate themselves more towards providing improved service to the patients, specially the poor ones.
Presided over by Vice Chancellor of BSMMU Professor Pran Gopal Datta, the function was also addressed, among others, by Pro Vice Chancellor Professor Mohammad Shahidullah, Professor AKM Anisul Haque and Professor Moazzem Hossain.
Former vice-chancellor of BSMMU Professor Mahmud Hasan gave the "Professor MA Kaderi Commemorative Speech" at the function.
Earlier, the programmes of the University Day began with hoisting the National Flag at 8:00am followed by releasing pigeons and balloons to the air.
