Govt to review project

Tuesday, 4 September 2007

Adviser for LGRD and Cooperatives M Anwarul Iqbal Monday said the government would review the contract of the Gulistan-Jatrabari flyover project to bring changes to its design and reduce cost as far as possible, reports BSS.
Briefing reporters after an inter-ministerial review meeting on the progress of the Tk 6.70 billion (670 crore) project in the conference room of his ministry, Iqbal said his ministry would send all related documents to the cabinet committee on economic affairs to facilitate this review.
Mayor of Dhaka Sadeq Hossain Khoka, Secretary of Local Government Division Sarfaraj Hossain and Secretary of IME Division Sheikh A K M Motahar Hossain, among others, were present.
The adviser, who is also in charge of the labour and employment ministry, said the functionaries of the contractor company cannot be traced now to carry out a joint review of the project. "They have disappeared."
He said the construction of the four-lane eight-km-long flyover is yet to begin and its estimated cost seemed to be very high.
Experts of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) have said that the project can be implemented at a cost of Tk 4.0 billion (400 crore) and this can be done with the government's own resources.
But in this case, the adviser said, the length of the flyover may be reduced by 1 kilometre besides bringing some structural changes. He said the design of the flyover has not been properly drawn by the construction firm.
