Govt to seek foreign aid for long-term rehabilitation of cyclone Sidr victims

Monday, 26 November 2007

Law and Information Adviser Barrister Mainul Hosein said the government was alert against chaos over distribution of relief materials among the cyclone victims.
After holding a meeting with news chiefs of electronic media at his office Sunday, the adviser said foreign assistance might be sought for long-term rehabilitation of the cyclone victims, as it was not an easy task for the government alone to tackle such an enormous task, reports UNB.
The adviser said it would take time to recoup the losses caused by the November 15 cyclone Sidr.
About distribution of relief goods by private organisations and individuals, he said it would be useful if the relief distribution was done in coordination with the government.
The adviser said the government's foremost duty now was to restore normal public life as soon as possible. In this context, he said, help from social workers was important.
Replying to a question, he said the US naval ships were carrying out the relief operation here at their own cost.
