Govt to sell rice, meat, eggs at low, fair prices

Tuesday, 5 March 2024

In two separate efforts, the government will begin selling rice to 5 million families at a very low price, and beef, mutton, chickens, and eggs to the general public at affordable prices at 30 locations in the city, report agencies.
Starting from March 10, the government will sell daily necessities, including meat and eggs, in Dhaka to support consumers during the month of Ramadan.
Minister of Fisheries and Livestock, Md Abdur Rahman, announced the initiative at the Osmani Smriti Auditorium in Dhaka on Monday, following a working session on the second day of the Deputy Commissioners Conference.
These necessities will be sold from trucks at 30 locations in the capital, with sales continuing until the day before Eid.
As part of the initiative, beef will be sold at Tk 600 per kg, mutton at Tk 900 per kg, dressed broiler chicken at Tk 280 per kg, and eggs at Tk 10.50 each.
In another development, Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder stated that around 150,000 tonnes of rice will be distributed among 5 million families under the government's Food Friendly Programme (FFP) during the fasting month.
"The ministry has instructed traders to begin the FFP programme on March 1, distributing 150,000 tonnes of rice to 5 million families by March 10, shortening the event's duration from March 20," Majumder said during the conference for DCs at Dhaka's Osmani Smriti Auditorium on Monday.
The food minister expressed the hope that this initiative would provide relief to the market as the rice will be sold at Tk 15 per kilogram, easing the demand for purchasing staple foods.
The minister stated that authorities have decided to issue a notice by February 20, which will take effect on April 14 when the crop arrives in the market.
