Govt to set up 100 new technical schools, seminar in Sylhet told

SYLHET, June 16: Two technical schools are being established at Golapganj and Beanibazar upazilas of Sylhet. Besides, two in Sunamganj and one each in Moulvibazar and Habiganj districts will be established soon, said Md. Shahjahan Mia, Director General of the Directorate of Technical Education at a seminar in a hotel in Sylhet city Monday. Site selection of all these is already complete while works would be started soon.
These are being established as part of the government's plan to set up technical schools at upazila level with a view to expanding the technical education facilities countrywide, Shahjahan said initially 100 schools is being set up countrywide.
Additional Secretary Md. Emran, also the Project director of the Skills & training enhancement project (STEP) chaired the event styled 'Role of technical and vocational education and training (TEVT) in sustaining economic development: Bangladesh perspective' while Divisional commissioner of Sylhet Md. Jamal Uddin Ahmed was the chief guest. Sylhet polytechnic institute principal Engr MA Halim and others also spoke while chief instructor of the institute Engr Ujjal Das Gupta presented the paper.
Teachers of different technical education institutes, industrialists, entrepreneurs, leading businessmen, academics and others joined it.
The speakers said, being the 8th largest population, Bangladesh has immense opportunity in terms of labour force. Quality technical and vocational education is essential in ensuring the country's competitiveness in the global market and it ensures decent work for all.
The demand for skilled workers and technicians has increased tremendously with the rapid industrialisation, development of businesses, globalisation and advancement in modern science and technology, they added.
Government, private, international and development partners need to strengthen inter relationship for undertaking appropriate strategy for accelerating the developement of TVET in order to reach Bangladesh, middle income country by 2021 and developed country by 2041, they noted.
