Govt to straighten 200 risky bends on roads, highways

Saturday, 11 April 2015

The government plans to straighten about 200 risky bends on roads and highways this year to prevent accidents, Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan has said, reports bdnews24.com
He said this Friday, a day after a bus accident on the Dhaka-Barisal Highway in Faridpur killed 25 passengers and injured at least 20 others.
Khan, while visiting an under-construction Eco Park in Madaripur, told reporters that there could be many reasons behind accidents.
He said, "The passengers are blaming reckless driving but the driver claimed there was a robbery attempt. Two committees are investigating. They'll bring out the truth."
"We've received funds for straightening bends on the roads and place dividers there," the minister said.
"Those curves will be fixed soon."
Last year, a PPRC and BRAC research identified 208 'accident-prone' spots in roads and highways.
It said 41 per cent of the accidents took place near bus terminals, 28 per cent near makeshift, roadside markets, and 18 per cent at bend on the roads.
