Govt to support modernisation of rice mills

The government will provide loan for modernisation of the country's rice mills, Industries Minister Dilip Barua said Wednesday. "Productivity of traditional rice mills can be increased by three to five per cent by using modern technology," he said. The minister was speaking at the inaugural ceremony of a-3 day international rice processing technology exposition in the city. Bangladesh Auto Major and Husking Mills Owners Association in cooperation with Shiny Trade Exposition of India organised the fair in Basundhara Convention Centre. A large quantity of rice is being wasted every year due to using traditional system for producing and processing of rice, the minister said, adding wastage of rice could be reduced along with ensuring quality if millers use modern technology. There are about 10,000 rice mills in the country which presently use age-old machinery, Mr Barua said, stressing the use of modern technology in cultivation and crops processing to ensure food safety.
