Govt to take more time to scrutinise CrPC (Amend) Bill

Monday, 30 March 2009

The government Sunday decided to take seven more days for further scrutiny of the CrPC (Amendment) Bill 2009 before being passed by parliament following certain demands placed by the police administration.
Law Minister Barrister Shafique Ahmed stated this to reporters after a meeting with top police brasses at his ministry Sunday afternoon, reports UNB.
State Minster for Law Adv Qamrul Islam, Home Secretary Abdus Sobhan Sikdar, IGP Nur Mohammad, RAB director general Hasan Mahmud Khandaker, Additional IGP NBK Tripura, DMP Commissioner Shahidul Islam and senior police officers were present at the meeting.
The law minister said the police administration felt that if the CrPC (Amendment) Bill 2009 was passed the existing power of the metropolitan police in six divisions would be curtailed and there might be conflict of power between the metropolitan police officers and the executive magistrates.
Barrister Shafique said that as per the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Act, power of the metropolitan police should not be curtailed.
Replying to a question, he said they are not under any pressure for not passing the law but since the metropolitan police raised a demand, they will seek seven more days for further scrutiny. "We'll have to look into two sides."
IGP Nur Mohammad told reporters that if the CrPC is amended by parliament, the metropolitan police will not have executive power. He said that they told the Min ister to keep in force the DMP Act of 1976, which did not create any problem for last 33 years.
The IGP thought that they have been able to convince the law minister and hoped that their suggestion would be considered.
