CHITTAGONG: The government is going to take steps against Maritime Dredging Corporation, a Malaysian firm, for leaving the Karnaphuli capital dredging project incomplete, chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Shipping Ministry Rafiqul Islam said Monday, according to a news agency.
The Malaysian firm will also be blacklisted for abandoning the project before its completion, Rafiqul Islam who was leading a six-member inspection team of the Parliamentary Standing Committee told reporters after inspecting the project area.
During the visit, over a hundred employees and workers of Pacific Marine Services, which is the local agent of the Malaysian firm, staged a demonstration at the project site demanding their arrear salaries.
Rafiqul Islam said the contract made between the Chittagong Port Authority and the Malaysian firm will be scrutinised to asses how much of the payment as per the contract has been paid to it.
If it is found that the firm took more money compared to the work it had accomplished, and steps will be taken to get back the amount, he added.
