Govt to unveil budget Monday

The present caretaker government will announce the national budget for fiscal 2008-09 Monday (June 9), second time in its one and a half years tenure, an official said Friday.

Finance and planning adviser Mirza Azizul Islam will read out the budget documents, which will be telecast on the Bangladesh Betar and Bangladesh Television (BTV) at 3.0 pm the same day.

Private electronic media will also carry the programme live with the help of Bangladesh Betar and BTV.

Total size of the next budget is likely to be Tk 996 billion, including Tk 256 billion annual development programme (ADP) expenditure, a high official of the finance ministry said.

Meanwhile, the government's highest economic policy-making body - National Economic Council (NEC) - is expected to approve annual ADP at its meeting today (Saturday).

Chief Adviser Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed will preside over the meeting to be held at the NEC conference room in the city.

Earlier, the Planning Commission on May 27 finalised Tk 256 billion ADP for the next fiscal year, which envisages implementation of 876 projects.

The proposed outlay will be Tk 9.0 billion lower than the size of the original ADP and Tk 31.0 billion up from the revised one of the outgoing fiscal 2007-08.

An official press release Friday said books relating to the budget speech, budget summary and annual financial statement will be available at the Press Information Department (PID) at the secretariat from 3.0pm Monday.

All information relating to the budget will also be available on the website the same day to make the budget more participatory. Any person or organisation would able to read or download all information and important documents on the budget from the Finance Division's website www.mof.gov.bd.

Anyone from home and abroad can send opinions and suggestions on the budget by completing a feedback form to be available on the website till June 16 at 5.0pm.

Besides, opinions and suggestions about the budget can also be sent in writing directly or by post.

The government release said all opinions and suggestions received would be considered and measures would be taken so that the rational suggestions can be reflected in the budget.

After taking public opinions the national budget will be finalised through promulgating an ordinance by the President.

People will also have access to some other websites of the government-- www.bangladesh.gov.bd, www.nbr-bd.org, www.plancomm.gov.bd, www.imed.gov.bd and www.bdpressinfom.org -- and of the private sector website www.bdnews24.com to get the information on the next year budget, the official release said.

Finance adviser Mirza Aziz will hold a post-budget press conference at the NEC auditorium in the city at 3:30pm Tuesday (June 10).
