Govt to uplift infrastructure, ensure business-friendly atmosphere in Ctg

CHITTAGONG, Feb 23: The government will take decisions on all burning issues including development of infrastructure and ensuring a business friendly environment in the port city.

Commerce Minister Muhammad Faruk Khan assured this as the chief guest at the inaugural ceremony of the 17th Chittagong International Trade Fair (CITF) 2009 in the port city Saturday.

The commerce minister apprised the gathering that a sum of Tk 1.0 billion (100 crore) has been allocated by the ECNEC for development of roads and highways in Chittagong apart from the new bridge and tunnel to be built over and under the Karnaphuli.

The government has taken up massive plans for development of the Chittagong Port enabling it to cope with increasing demands of the future, he said.

The minister requested the management of the Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) to initiate a proposal for allocation of a permanent venue with all required amenities for CITF, which may serve the interest of business community and the consumers alike at least for the next five decades.

City mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury as the special guest drew attention to the minister to the acute crisis of gas, power and water being faced by the city dwellers.

He proposed for power generation using crude oil as a substitute of gas. The mayor requested the chief guest to allocate a suitable plot at Patenga beach area as CITF venue.

He urged the government for shifting the head office of the Chief Controller of Export and Import from Dhaka for convenience of businesses in Chittagong and also full-fledged functioning of the newly formed Karnaphuli Gas Systems Company Ltd. in Chittagong to address the demands of business community and industrialists of this prime business destination.

CCCI President MA Latif MP expressed his firm determination to freeing the nation from the economic plight they have been struggling with since independence.

Also present in the inaugural ceremony were CCCI Senior Vice-president MA Salam, Vice-president SM Shafiul Hoque, directors Fahim Ahmed Faruk, Md Shahin Alam, Shahabuddin Ahmed, AKM Akhter Hossain, Md Emdadul Hoque Chowdhury, Wasiur Rahman Chowdhury, Mohammed Shouib Riad, Md Nurul Amin, SM Mahbubul Islam and Benazir Chowdhury.
