Govt to work with WTO to uphold nat'l interest

Foreign adviser Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury has said the government will always work for national interests, specially with the World Trade Organisation (WTO), through interactions with the civil society organisations, reports BSS.
Addressing a function of unveiling the cover of translation works of the WTO agreements, organised by 'Karmajibi Nari', a non-governmental organisation, at CIRDAP auditorium in the city Wednesday, he said the constructive and pioneering role of Bangladesh as an LDC has earned appreciation after becoming a member of the WTO in the early 1990s.
In recognition of this, the adviser said, Bangladesh has been elected chairman of the LDCs recently.
Presided over by Shirin Akhter, the function was also addressed, among others, by Bangladesh Ambassador to WTO Debapriya Bhattacharya, Human Rights activist advocate Hamida Hossain and Trade Programme Manager of Delegation of the European Commission (EC) Jenni Christensen.
The foreign adviser said Dhaka has become successful in projecting harmful aspects of globalisation in different forums.
Dhaka, in concert with others, has been trying to convince others of the unequal competition created following globalisation in connection with distribution of income, employment and production in developing countries.
Using words of praises for Karmajibi Nari for translation of the WTO agreements into Bengali, Chowdhury said it would help in creation of awareness and spread of knowledge among the people.
In this context, he said the government has been working hard for fair distribution of income through the economic development of the country.
He further said the government wants to reach the benefits of globalisation to the door-steps of the people.
Advocate Hamida Hossain said the government should take steps so that people can understand the language of WTO.
WTO, she said, uses jargons, which are not understandable to ordinary people.
Debapriya said the translation will reduce dependence on research workers. World trade, he said, should be a means for development.
