FE Report
The government has imparted training to around 4,000 slaughterers countrywide for slaughtering sacrificial animals, removing their rawhides and processing meat during the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha.
The Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock (MoFL) has arranged the training programme. The programme will continue training up more slaughterers.
People mostly get rawhides of their sacrificial animals removed by untrained slaughterers.
Consequently, a good number of rawhides get damaged during the process, a senior official of the ministry said.
He added, "We have already completed training of more than 4,000 slaughterers. The initiative was taken by the MoFL before Eid-ul-Azha to ensure proper sacrificial activities of animals across the country."
He also said, "Every year, a good number of rawhides and skins get damaged due to lack of sufficient know how among the people regarding this. People don't get good prices of such hides, whose money is provided to the poor as donation after selling."
The commerce ministry has formed five committees including central joint coordination committee, divisional, central Dhaka monitoring committee, district monitoring committee and control cell.
The country produced 2.3 million tonnes of salt this year, which is highest in 62 years.
More than 50 per cent of rawhide and skins are collected during the Eid.
The supply of rawhides and skins in the country is over 20 million units, according to the Bangladesh Trade and Tariff Commission (BTTC) data.
For the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha, 12.98 million animals are ready for sacrifice across the country, a 3 per cent hike in supply compared to last year.
Fisheries and Livestock Minister Abdur Rahman revealed the information during an inter-ministerial meeting at the conference room of the Department of Livestock Services (DLS) on May 16.
The minister stated that this year the maximum possible demand for sacrificial cattle is 10.7 million. There are 2.27 million additional cattle available compared to the demand.
These include 5.27 million cows, 0.161 million buffaloes, 6.8 5 million goats, 0.77 million sheep, and 1,850 animals of other species.
The rawhide prices of salted sacrificial cows have already been fixed at Tk55-60 per square foot (sqft) in the capital city and Tk 50-55 per sqft outside Dhaka, an increase of Tk5.0 and Tk 7.0 in such areas compared to the previous year.
On the other hand, the prices of goat hides have been set at Tk20-25 per sqft and the prices of baqri skin at Tk18-20 per sqft.
The commerce ministry and representatives from leather sector have fixed the rates recently.
