Govt tries to stir up controversy centring religion: BNP

It criticises keeping schools, colleges open during Ramadan

Bangladesh National Party (BNP) said on Wednesday that the government is trying to create religion-centric controversy, which is why it has kept schools, colleges and madrasas open during this holy month of Ramadan.
Senior joint secretary general of the party Ruhul Kabir Rizvi addressing press briefing at the party's Nayapaltan central office said that Bangladesh is predominantly a Muslim majority country (90 percent) where in the past all schools, colleges and madrasas used to remain closed during the month of Ramadan.
But this time (this year) it is (decision to keep schools, colleges and madrasas during half of Ramadan) an exception, Rizvi said.
"This dummy government has decided to keep all schools, colleges and madrasas open through half of the holy month of Ramadan. This matter also went to the court," he added.
Question is that why the dummy government wants to create controversy on the issues that are related with religious culture, he said.
"If you notice the issue minutely then you will see that opening schools, colleges and madrashas and asking (by the government) not to hold Iftar party during Ramadan are just to create controversies by this dummy government," he continued.
"The government doesn't feel any remorse to do jokes with the majority people's religious beliefs and culture," he said.
"The government makes jokes with the people by only fixing prices of low standard dates. Consuming dates during Iftar relates with religious sentiment of the people whereas a government minister advised people about what items to be consumed or not during Iftar. As they (government) are not elected as ministers and members of parliament (MPs) through free and fair elections (votes) so they are making jokes with the people as 'big brother'," he continued.
He said that this dummy government has increased tax on dates citing the item as luxurious.
