The three-day long "2nd Knit+tex Bangladesh 2009 International Expo" kicked off Thursday with a view to introducing the latest technology and machinery to the local and foreign businessmen.
"The government is trying to get duty-free access to the global market for ready-made garment to boost export," Commerce Minister Faruk Khan said while inaugurating the fair in the city.
The expo would provide a platform for business deals with foreign buyers and leading local manufacturers and exporters, he said.
He also added that the government would look into the matter of yarn price hike.
With the ever increasing competition, the knitwear industry can expand its share in the world market and attract more foreign investment in the country's highly potential sector, Fazlul Hoque, president of Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA), said.
The BKMEA president expressed hope that the exposition would help the sector to overcome the impact of recession in the coming days.
A total of 76 companies from 15 countries including the host, Bangladesh, are participating in the fair showcasing a wide range of industrial machinery and equipment essential at various stages of knitwear manufacturing.
The exposition is jointly organised by BKMEA and Conference and Exhibition Management Service (CEMS) at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre.
The expo will remain open from 10:30 am to 7:30 pm.
Annisul Huq, president of Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) and Mehrun N Islam, president and managing director of CEMS group, among others, were present in the programme.
