Govt urged not to lease out offshore gas, oil fields

Sunday, 6 September 2009

Leaders of the left-leaning political parities Saturday urged the government not to lease out offshore gas and oil fields to multinational companies in the greater interest of the nation.
They also demanded immediate punishment of the policemen who attacked a peaceful procession of the National Committee to Protect Oil, Gas, Mineral Resources, Power and Ports Wednesday, leaving over 100 people injured.
The demand came out at a press conference at the office of Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal here in the morning, reports UNB.
Gonotantrik Bam Morcha (GBM), an alliance of the left-leaning political parties arranged the conference.
Morcha Co-ordinator Bazlur Rashid Firoz read out a written statement while co-ordinator of Gonosangati Andolon Jonayed Saki, central coordinator of Gono Front Tipu Biswas, general secretary of Gonotantrik Biplobi Party Mosharraf Mishu and central leader of Biplobi Workers' Party Bonnishikha Jamani, among others, attended the conference.
In his statement, Bazlur Rashid said a section of people want to lease out the country's offshore gas fields to the imperialist multinational companies for personal gains and interests.
"The country will get only nine percent of gas while the foreign companies will take away 91 percent of it if the government leases out the gas fields", he said.
He called upon the people and civil society members to come forward for resisting the government attempt to lease out the offshore gas and oil fields to foreign companies and thus save the country's natural resources.
