President of the Chittagong Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce & Industry (CMCCI) Khalilur Rahman has urged the Ministry of Commerce not to shift the tea auction centre from Chittagong.
The CMCCI president, in a letter sent to the commerce minister Monday, said Bangladesh Tea Board and Tea Traders' Association in Chittagong have been playing a vital role for about six decades and helping to keep tea market stable through auction.
If auction related infrastructure is abandoned, a large number of people will be unemployed and at the same time there is a possibility to create a negative impact on revenue collection, he added.
The CMCCI president said, "The initiative to move the tea auction centre has vehemently been opposed by people from all walks of life and business community of the port city. Even the Parliamentary Standing Committee of the government has opposed the decision."
Mr Rahman said the auction centre shifting decision may hamper ongoing economic activities of the area and made a request to keep the economy of Chittagong vibrant.
