Government has been urged to continue its efforts for industrialisation and take initiatives for attracting foreign investment in the industrial sector of the country.
President of the Bangladesh Chamber of Industries (BCI) AK Azad made the appeal while presiding over its 21st annual general meeting (AGM)-2006 in the city Saturday, said a press release.
The BCI president said private sector is a key player in the fields of investment, employment and savings of the country.
This sector, therefore, needs to emerge as an engine of growth and work in cooperation with the government in policy formulation and implementation, he observed.
Azad also stressed the need for ensuring a congenial atmosphere at home by improving the overall situation for the smooth growth of the country's private sector.
He also laid emphasis on a prudent business and investment plan considering all aspects of current socio-political and economic situation and the realities of the domestic as well as the global market.
The BCI president further put emphasis on making local products qualitative and competitive and on expansion of the industrial base to run the economy smoothly.
In this connection, he also stressed the need for reducing dependence on import by increasing industrial exports to the overseas market.
The BCI president further observed that abnormal price hike of essentials had caused great sufferings to the common people. It is also affecting the economic growth of the country adversely, he added.
The BCI president urged the authorities concerned to take effective measures to arrest soaring prices of essentials.
Meanwhile, the meeting elaborately discussed the problems and impediments to industrialisation, export-import, investment, abnormal price hike and infrastructural problems of the country and laid emphasis on solutions of those problems, the release added.
Among others, BCI Senior Vice President MA Shahid and Vice President Shamsur Rahman and directors AM Badruzzaman Khan Khasru, Md Raijab Sharif, Md Jahangir Alam, Omar Farooque Bhuiyan, Shamim Ahmed, Enayet Ullah Siddiqui, Shahidul Islam Niru, Delower Hossain Raja, Zahid Maleque, M Nasir, Priti Chakraborty, KM Zakir Hussain and Jahangir Alam and members Razia Hossain, Md Zakir Hossain, Md Sayedur Rahman, AKM Sharifur Rahman and Bipul Chandra Saha were present at the AGM.
