Govt urged to curb air pollution in city

Green activists in the city Saturday urged the government to take immediate steps to curb air pollution for saving public health and check further deterioration of environment of the country, reports UNB. They made the call at a human chain in front of the Institute of Fine Arts at Dhaka University Saturday. Poribesh Bachao Andolon (POBA), an environmentalist group, organised the human chain with a view to creating mass awareness over constant air pollution in the city. Chaired by POBA member Syed ASM Ashrafuzzaman Afroz, the programme was attended, among others, by POBA Chairman Abu Naser Khan, Greenmind Society president Amin Hasan, Peace Secretary General Ifma Hossain, environmentalists Morshed Alam, Faruk Hosain, Aslam Khan and Sabina Naeem. Addressing the human chain, speakers said Dhaka city has been ranked as the second worst city to live for the second consecutive time, according to the recent survey of Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) affiliated with the UK-based weekly Economist. Air pollution is one of the major reasons to rank as worst city, they said.
