Govt urged to lift ban on politics for creating atmosphere for polls

Wednesday, 3 October 2007

Leaders of the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) and the Gono Azadi League have urged the caretaker government to remove all kinds of restriction on politics to create a congenial atmosphere for holding the general elections as per the Election Commission (EC) announced roadmap.
They made the appeal from a joint meeting held in the city Tuesday, reports UNB.
Among others, JSD leaders Hasanul Huq Inu, Syed Jafar Sazzad, Mainuddin Khan Badal, Shirin Akhter and Advocate Habibur Rahman and Gono Azadi League leaders Alhaj Advocate Abdus Samad, Advocate Nazrul Islam, Saidur Rahman and Abdul Jabbar were present at the meeting.
The leftist parties told the meeting that the country might face constitutional and political crises if the EC fails to hold a free and fair election as per its roadmap.
The leaders also observed that it was the responsibility of the caretaker government and the EC to dispel the suspicion created in public mind whether the stalled general elections would be held as per the EC's roadmap by 2008 or not.
The two parties further took a resolution that the allies in the 14-party combine would take a common stand on approaching the EC and the government to debar the black money holders, loan-defaulters, war criminals and religion-based parties from participating in the polls.
They also decided to take up the issue of separating the EC from the executive during their dialogue with the EC about reforms.
They will also call for formulating a policy for appointing Commissioners to the EC in a way so that question does not arise about their neutrality.
