Govt urged to reconsider 25pc duty on imported mobile phone set

Commerce Minister Lt Col (retd) Faruk Khan Friday called upon entrepreneurs to set up mobile phone assembling industry in the country to reach cell phone sets to the common people at an affordable price, reports BSS.
"The government would provide all-out support, including banking facility, to the entrepreneurs if they come forward to set up mobile phone industry in the country," he told the concluding day function of the five-day 3rd Dhaka International Telecom Fair in the city.
The commerce minister also said establishing mobile phone assembling industry would definitely reduce dependence on importing mobile phone sets and would play an important role in expanding the information technology in the country.
Regarding imposing 25 per cent duty on imported cell phone sets in the proposed budget for the next fiscal year, he said the duty has been imposed for encouraging the entrepreneurs to set up mobile phone assembling industry in the country and cutting dependence on importing cell phone sets.
