The country's garment accessories and packaging makers Sunday urged the government to set up an institute to develop the industry.
"An institute of garment accessories is badly needed in the country so that we can develop the industry," Bangladesh Garment Accessories and Packaging Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGAPMEA) president Rafez Alam Chowdhury said.
He said, "This institute will help increase the competitiveness of the industry in the international market gradually."
He said the industry earned $2.75 billion through export in fiscal year 2010-11 which is 52 per cent higher than the fiscal year 2009-10.
"Now the demand of packaging items for the export goods, mainly RMG and frozen food and fish, is estimated to be more than $1.0 billion," he said
The country's readymade sector would depend on imported packaging and accessories 10 to 12 years back. But now the accessories and packaging makers are able to export after meeting the local demand.
The backward linkage industry makes around 35 items including carton, poly bag, paper packaging, elastic, drawstring, embroidery, sewing threat, zipper, plastic items, back board, neck board, gum tap, bar code and so on.
The apparel and garment accessories exporters ship items directly to Canada, Middle East, South Africa, East European countries and South Asian region, which is 20 per cent of the country's total export.
He said: "At this moment we have around 1000 members and among them more than half of our members are involved in the packaging industry. We have lack of packaging and accessories experts in our country."
He said: "To increase the number of experts on packaging technology we have started training programme. This is the first time this sort of training is introduced."
Asian Packaging Federation (APF) is organising this training programme jointly with BGAPMEA and Indian Institute of Packaging at the Washington Hotel in the city.
APF president Safi Ullah Chowdhury said: "We will provide training to 25 sector people of the country. They will get details information about technology of RMG, agro based food and pharmaceutical packaging, rigid plastic, flexible, plastics, shrink packaging."
"At the same time we will show different ink and printing techniques for flexible packaging material, and quality control and testing of packaging materials and packages, innovative design and quality control and testing of packaging material and packages," he said.
He said different trainers from India and Sri Lanka will impart training to the sector people.
BGAPMEA president said: “This sort of training will help a few sector people but only an institute can help us more. More than 200,000 people are indirectly and indirectly involved in this sector.”
"So we need an institute as early as possible for the development of sector people," he also said.
