Govt urged to stay operation of law splitting DCC
Thursday, 1 December 2011
BNP leader Barrister Moudud Ahmed MP has urged the government to stay the operation of the law passed by Parliament to split the Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) terming it as unconstitutional, reports UNB.
He made the demand at a press conference at the Parliament Media Centre Wednesday.
On Tuesday, Parliament passed the Local Government (City Corporation) Act (Amendment) Bill 2011 to split the Dhaka City Corporation into two.
Former Law Minister Moudud protested passage of the bill for dividing the DCC into South and North, saying it has showed the "government's autocratic attitude."
He said that dividing the DCC is contrary to the Constitution and it has violated Article 59 of the Constitution. This law should not be implemented.
The BNP standing committee member further said that the ruling party, sensing it will lose the mayoral election to DCC, has taken the course of dividing the Dhaka City Corporation to avoid the election.
He said it has been done with "political motive" to occupy the office of the city corporation by their (ruling party) nominated men.
