Govt urged to train farmers to ensure food security

Tuesday, 24 November 2009

FE Report
Experts urged the government to train farmers, food processing holders and investors on post harvest handling of crops to minimise agricultural losses to ensure the food security of the country.
According to FAO estimation, some 30 - 50 per cent of agricultural products do not reach the consumers and are lost in the process, resulting in less profit for the farmers and stakeholders and enhancing risks in food security.
Speakers said while natural calamities are beyond our control, managing and controlling the crop losses can be easy if some investments are made on the processing of agricultural products, mainly in the post harvest chain.
In this context, CIRDAP organised a Workshop on 'Reduction of Post-Harvest Agricultural Crops Losses' today at the Centre's Headquarters in Dhaka.
