City's taxi cab operators said Tuesday that there should be replacement of old and defective cabs for providing better services to commuters.
The operators under a newly formed organisation styled Bangladesh Association of Taxi Cab Operators (BATCO) said this at a press conference in the city.
They urged the government to waive interest on the loan taken earlier for purchase of cabs claming those as very defective for operation as taxi cab in the city.
They also urged the government to declare the taxi cab sector as sick as most of the cabs currently are in a vulnerable condition.
President of the BATCO said that a vested quarter with the intention to make a windfall profit lured the small investors to buy around 11000 taxi cabs until 2003.
"We had no other option but to buy 800 cc cabs for operating in the city. Now we want replacement of such cabs for giving better services to passengers," he added.
He also said the government should form an expert committee representing the genuine taxi cab operators before issuing fresh instructions for import of cabs for the city.
He said at least 8000 cabs were manufactured in India and those were dumped into Bangladesh while the manufacturers had failed to market those in any part of the world.
According to the taxi cab operators, around 4000 tax cabs are plying in the city streets out of 11000.
They also said most of the cabs have become damaged due to their low longevity.
