Govt waives import tax on electric school buses

Friday, 1 May 2026

FE REPORT
The government has waived all taxes on the import of electric school buses in a bid to make safer student transportation more affordable for educational institutions.
The NBR issued a gazette notification on Thursday granting the tax exemption. Currently, importing a school bus requires paying around 61 per cent in taxes.
Under the new provision, eligible buses must have more than 17 seats, including the driver's.
To qualify for the exemption, the buses must be brand new and imported either by the government, private entities or importers holding agreements with educational institutions.
Also, each vehicle must come with a warranty ensuring at least seven years of operation without battery replacement or a minimum running capacity of 300,000 kilometres.
The buses must be painted yellow and clearly labelled as school, college or student transport, and equipped with CCTV, IP cameras, and GPS tracking systems. Additionally, the buses must be registered with the BRTA.
Importers will be allowed to transfer ownership or sell the buses to educational institutions within five years of import without paying duties or taxes. However, if the vehicle is sold, transferred or used for other purposes, all applicable taxes and duties and taxes will be imposed.
