CHITTAGONG, June 14 (UNB): Commerce and Education Adviser Hossain Zillur Rahman said Saturday the government wanted to move forward to holding the national election ensuring the participation of Awami League (AL) and BNP, as both the parties represent the country's larger population.
"The temporary release of Awami League President Sheikh Hasina by the government is one step forward in achieving its main goal of holding a free, fair and acceptable national election," he said.
The adviser was addressing the biennial conference of Bangladesh Economic Association, Chittagong Chapter, at the Theatre Institute.
About Friday's remarks by eminent lawyer Kamal Hossain and Convener of Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) Ferdous Ahmed Qureshi, the adviser said it was not important who said what, but the important thing for the government was to hold elections.
He said the government had released Hasina on humanitarian grounds following all the legal processes. "The government is ready for taking any step in the future for the sake of holding the national election with the participation of all parties."
Dr Zillur said the government was also considering the same process for setting free former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia what it followed in releasing Hasina.
He expressed the hope that the political parties would not do any thing that would take the country to the pre-1/11 situation. "They would take constructive decisions in the interest of the nation."
Central General Secretary of the Association Abul Barakat and Dhaka University professor Abdul Mannan Chowdhury, among others, spoke at the function.
