Govt will have 'no say' if hartal observed democratically: Sahara

Wednesday, 24 November 2010

Home Minister Sahara Khatun has said intelligence agencies have been instructed to collect information if any subversive acts are being planned in the name of hartal on November 30, reports UNB.
She said, "Since calling hartal is a democratic right, we will have nothing to say if they observe it in a democratic way…but enforcement of hartal in undemocratic and destructive ways will not be tolerated".
Chaos and destructive behaviour would not be tolerated, she added.
The minister was briefing journalists Tuesday, responding to the countrywide dawn to dusk hartal called by BNP on the said date.
The home minister regretted that the BNP had called the hartal at a time when schools were having final exams. She requested the BNP chairperson and her party leaders to call off the hartal in consideration of the exams, as well as the harm caused to the country's economy.
"The hartal has been called to protect Khaleda Zia's cantonment house. The Appellate Division has set November 29 to hear the leave to stay application of her. Since the BNP assumes that they would not get back the house lawfully, they have called the hartal", she added.
