Govt working sincerely to hold free and fair polls : President

President Iajuddin Ahmed Monday said that the government was working sincerely with firm commitment to hold free and fair polls as per the announced road map. He said this while accepting the credentials of the newly-appointed High Commissioner (HC) of Canada to Bangladesh, Robert McDougall at Bangabhaban here, reports BSS.
Welcoming the new envoy, the President expressed satisfaction at the existing good bilateral relations between the two countries. "Bangladesh considers Canada as an important development partner of it ," he pointed out.
Iajuddin urged the Canadian government and its investors to invest in Bangladesh's promising sectors including power, energy, textile, garments, food processing and packaging, IT and public services as presently a very congenial investment atmosphere is persisting here.
Referring Canada as the 6th largest bilateral donor to Bangladesh in terms of total aid disbursement the President said, valuable contributions were made by Canada through CIDA in the development strides of Bangladesh.
The president expressed the hope that cooperation in trade and investment would be further expanded between the two countries in the coming years as well as the Canadian government would undertake more development projects in Bangladesh through CIDA and other agencies.
Iajuddin also attached importance to educational exchange programmes between the two countries and sought the High Commissioner's cooperation in this regard.
McDougall applauded Bangladesh's role in the improvement of various development and poverty alleviation fields.
He also assured the President of extending his all out cooperation and efforts towards strengthening bilateral relation, trade, investment and expanding educational cooperation between the two countries.
Secretary of the President's Office Md Sirajul Islam, Foreign Secretary Touhid Hosain, Military Secretary to the President Major General Mohammad Ruhul Amin and President's Press Secretary Abdul Awal Howlader were present.
Earlier, on his arrival at Bangabhaban, a smart contingent of President's Guard Regiment gave the Canadian High Commissioner a guard of honour.
