Govt working to create sustainable democratic culture: President

Thursday, 26 March 2009

President Zillur Rahman termed the last general polls with high voter turnout as the reflection of democratic will of the masses of Bangladesh and the new government is working to realise it, reports UNB.
"The government is functioning to create a solid foundation for a sustainable and transparent democratic culture in the country," he said when chief of the European Union's Election Observer Mission (EOM) Alexander Graf Lambsdorrf paid a call on him at Bangabhaban Wednesday.
Thanking EOM members for their support to make the last general election acceptable to all, President Zillur Rahman informed the chief of EOM about the participation of the opposition members in both the Houses and the parliamentary standing committees.
"The present government is strongly committed to making the country free from poverty and illiteracy," he said.
Referring to EU's technical and logistic support to the Election Commission (EC) for its sustainable professional development, Lambsdorrf said that the EU would like to continue its assistance to the EC for regular updating of the existing voter lists in a bid to hold the upcoming elections in a more free, fair and credible manner.
"The EU expects that Bangladesh's parliament would be the centre of all debates with active participation of the opposition," the EOM chief said.
He also expressed his deep sorrow over the recent Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) Headquarters carnage.
