Friday, 18 July 2008

Bishshoshahitto Kendro (BSK) and djuice of GrameenPhone initiated a pioneering venture called "Know Bangladesh" starting from July 15, 2008.

The programme is a bicycle tour across the country to learn more about the lifestyle and the hardships of the rural and semi-urban people.

Speaking in a press conference, BSK Chairman Abdullah Abu Sayeed said the regions and localities of this country are fountains of immense variation.

"This natural variety of our country will cultivate immense strength in youths that will take them forward in life. This will also inspire the youths spiritually as well as make them self-confident and patriotic," he added.

Participants have been grouped in units with a maximum of ten members, each headed by a group leader. Decision making on the tour is also a responsibility of the captain.

Each participating group set off along their determined routes at the same time and the duration of each trip will be of 15 days maximum.

How far or how long the participants will ride bicycles is entirely up to them. They will share their experiences among themselves and gather know-how along the journey.

On their journeys, these groups are given some tasks to better acquaint themselves with Bangladesh. They have been asked to analyse the geographic terrain, flora and fauna of the places visited. They may have a discussion with the local government officials to gather information about the area. They will visit schools, colleges and/or universities and encourage the students to read books and participate in future programmes of the BSK.

The teams will have a reunion on their return, where they will share their experiences, interesting incidents during the tour, pictures, etc. Each individual will also need to submit a write-up on the experience and the best write-up and photographs will be published in BSK's annual magazine as well as in some newspapers.
