GP donates Tk 43.1m to CA's relief fund

Grameenphone (GP) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Erik Aas handed over three cheques worth Tk 43.1 million (4.31 crore) to the Chief Adviser's Relief Fund.
Chief Adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed accepted the contributions from the Grameenphone CEO at the CA's office in the city Wednesday.
The cheques included Tk 20 million from GP, Tk 20 million from Telenor, the majority shareholder of the mobile phone company, and another Tk 3.1 million as contribution from its employees as part of their one day's salary.
The chief adviser appreciated the contributions made by GP, Telenor and by the employees of Grameenphone for the flood-affected people of the country.
In his letter to the CA, Telenor President and CEO Jon Fredrik Baksaas said, "We are very much grieved by the sufferings of the people affected by the ongoing floods in Bangladesh. While expressing our heartfelt sympathy for the victims, we laud the remarkable efforts made by your government to provide emergency relief to those affected. Feeling an urge to stand by the flood-affected people, we at Telenor have decided to donate Tk 20 million to your Relief Fund."
Grameen CEO said, "As responsible corporate citizens, we feel an urge to stand by the flood-affected people at this time of their urgent need. Thus, we are humbly making a contribution of Tk 20 million to the CA's Relief Fund."
In addition, the GP has also joined the emergency relief distribution efforts in cooperation with various government agencies and NGOs in different flood-affected districts of the country.
Distribution of relief materials including food and other essential items worth over Tk 10 million has been started in the flood-affected areas of different districts in Dhaka, Rajshahi and Sylhet divisions.
A good number of GP employees have also volunteered to take part in the relief distribution efforts.
