GP executives pass second day of hunger strike unto death

Tuesday, 2 June 2009

The condition of a sacked Grameenphone (GP) executive deteriorated seriously as their hunger strike unto death in front of the company premises in the city continued for the second day Monday demanding reinstatement and payment of salary and allowances in arrears, reports BSS.
According to a press release of the aggrieved executives they earlier held rallies and sit-ins and formed human chains to press home their demands.
Grameenphone, it said, sacked the officers without any prior notice in gross violation of the labour laws. The officers were invited to the office in the name of a meeting and were served the termination letters, it said.
It said that Grameenphone, instead of confirming the recruits, had taken the path of sacking its personnel after they completed three to five years of service. The university educated recruits, it said, found it impossible to get a government job because after serving the Grameenphone they became age-barred. It described the Grameenphone practice "inhuman."
