GP loses subscribers in June while Robi gains

The country's largest mobile network operator Grameenphone (GP) lost 150,000 subscribers in June, while the second-largest operator, Robi Axiata, gained 2,80,000 new users in the same month, according to fresh statistics.
The latest data of the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) shows that GP subscribers stood at 84.80 million at the end of June -- down from 84.95 million in May.
This is the first decline of GP subscribers after January this year, according to the BTRC data.
The telecom industry overall gained 222,000 subscribers in June, reaching 184.45 million from 184.23 million in May, the data shows.
Following the new addition, the number of Robi's subscribers now stands at 54.53 million.
The operator has been looking to consolidate its customer base by adding new subscribers continuously. Robi has so far added 960,000 new subscribers this year.
GP has added 1.78 million new subscribers this year despite a loss in June.
The third largest mobile operator, Banglalink, gained 120,000 new subscribers in June, while state-owned Teletalk lost 30,000 users in the same month.
On the other hand, the country's internet witnessed a big leap in June, gaining 690,000 new users, according to BTRC data.
At the end of May, the number of internet subscribers was 125.52 million, which increased to 126.21 million at the end of June.
Mobile subscriber means the biometric verified subscribers/subscriptions who have any activity (voice, data, sms etc.) at least once in the preceding 90 days while internet subscriber means subscribers/subscriptions that have accessed the internet at least once in the preceding 90 days.
BTRC has calculated the ISP subscriber information through intense market analysis, consultation and data collection from almost all ISPs.
