Graft can't be curbed thru' flexibility: HC
FE REPORT | Wednesday, 3 May 2023
The High Court (HC) observed that corruption cannot be stopped by showing flexibility, and the anti-graft body has to take a hard line to curb corruption.
Quoting a Nobel laureate, the HC also observed that the South Asian countries show flexibility in tackling corruption.
The HC bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Mohammad Showkat Ali Chowdhury passed the observation while hearing a 'suo moto' (on its own motion) matter on Tuesday.
Quoting the anti-corruption and anti-money laundering speeches of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the bench presiding judge said, "If we want to make the country a Golden Bangladesh, we need golden people. Everyone has to play a role for that."
Senior lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan appeared in the court hearing on behalf of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), while Deputy Attorney General A K M Amin Uddin Manik represented the state.
At one stage of the hearing, the HC bench issued a rule upon the government bodies concerned to explain as to why they should not be directed to take necessary steps to include the anti-corruption and anti-money laundering speeches of Bangabandhu in the curriculum of all educational institutions, including schools, colleges and universities.
The court fixed June 4 for further hearing on the issue.
