Grameenphone, the country's largest cell phone company, has taken up a programme to make its offices and products green and environment friendly by reducing green house gas (GHG) emission.
"Grameenphone will be making a green company with a target to reduce 15 per cent emission of GHGs", said its Chief Executive Officer Oddvar Hesjedal while inaugurating a campaign programme "Stay Green, Stay Close," in a city hotel today (Thursday).
He said though the mobile sector accounts for less than one per cent of the total carbon emission in the country, Grameenphone feels it is their corporate responsibility to improve the environmental impact and reduce carbon emission aiming at saving the world from global warming.
The CEO said the programme has a target to introduce green technologies in all its office services including mobile phone sets and make those energy efficient, reusable and eco-friendly.
Objective of the campaign is to support a healthier environment by reducing GP's carbon footprint through various environmental activities and initiatives. The environment campaign will continue round the year through different awareness programmes, activities and initiatives.
To make the campaign a success, GP signed agreements on power purchase and system procurement for renewable energy with Grameen Shakti Ltd, LM Ericsson Bangladesh Ltd and Huawei Technologies Ltd.
GP CEO Oddvar Hesjedal, Grameen Shakti Consultant MA Gofran, Acting CEO of Ericsson Bangladesh Anneli Ahman and CEO of Huawei signed the agreements on behalf of their respective organisations.
